What makes Christmas so nostalgic?

What makes Christmas so nostalgic?

No festival in our Western cultural sphere is as closely associated with memories and nostalgia as Christmas. Don't we all seek contemplation and coziness, especially at Christmas, and hold on to traditions that we often have known and loved since childhood? Christmas traditions are sometimes passed down through generations, such as nostalgic Christmas decorations, Christmas customs, or even the Christmas meal in some families, which is the same every year. Nostalgic images decorate the festively adorned house, traditional types of cookies are baked year after year, making Christmas nostalgic every year in a way we don't experience at any other time of the year.

What does nostalgia actually mean?

Wikipedia writes: Nostalgia refers to a longing turn towards past objects or practices. Nostalgia can relate both to one's own life and to times not personally experienced (so-called collective nostalgia). The word derives from Latin nostalgia (“homesickness“), which itself can be traced back to the Ancient Greek words νόστος nóstos (“return, homecoming”) and ἄλγος álgos (“pain”) can be traced back to.

And so we all long back to the Christmas celebrations of our childhood, to a time when Christmas cast a great spell on us and we could hardly wait for the Christmas festival to finally arrive. Hopefully, everyone has fond memories of the Christmas celebrations of their childhood and wants to experience this magic of the Christmas season again. Through the same traditions and the nostalgia of the Christmas season, we are transported back to our childhood.

Many of the advent calendars from Sellmer Verlag with their nostalgic Christmas motifs originated in long past times and fit wonderfully with your nostalgic Christmas decor. And who knows, maybe you even recognize some of the motifs from your childhood days.

How you can create a nostalgic Christmas

Without lights, scents, and gifts, Christmas wouldn't be Christmas. Already by the end of November, but at the latest by the 1st Advent, lights are hung in the house and garden, brightening the dark season. The scent of cookies fills the air with the start of Christmas baking, and the first gifts are purchased. Nutcrackers and nativity scenes find their way from the basement to the living rooms, Christmas pictures are hung up, and suitable, nostalgic Christmas tree decorations are spotted and supplemented if necessary.

The nostalgia advent calendars from Sellmer Verlag as decoration are a wonderful addition and complete the Christmas decor. You might still know these vintage and nostalgia motifs from your childhood, and they are still popular with both young and old today. Many advent calendars are from the 60s, 70s, and 80s and make hearts beat faster with their old Christmas pictures.

But our nostalgia advent calendars not only shorten the waiting time until Christmas for you, they are also a wonderful gift for family members and friends and bring a smile to the recipient's face already in the morning.
