How the Glitter gets on our calendars
Advent calendars with sparkling details have been part of our regular product portfolio for 80 years. In the past, the glitter was applied by hand. Employees working on the assembly line took the calendars off the line and dipped them through trays filled with glitter particles – that was quite laborious! Then came the glitter revolution: Tim Sellmer, son of our company founder, developed a machine in the 1970s that automated the glitter application. This glitter machine has been in almost daily use for over 50 years and faithfully and reliably performs its service. Of course, repairs are occasionally necessary. But we are especially proud of our machine and never want to be without it. It is unique.
When was the first paper Advent calendar printed?
Paper Advent calendars have a long tradition and trace back to a very specific person. Gerhard Lang, who lived from 1881 to 1974, was a pastor’s son from Maulbronn in Swabia. He is considered the inventor of the first printed – albeit doorless – Advent calendar. This came onto the market in Munich in 1908. At that time, it was sold under the name Christmas calendar. Colored drawings could be cut out from cardboard and gradually glued onto a motif template made of cardboard. This created a colorful and atmospheric scene for Christmas Eve. From 1945, Richard Sellmer then brought Advent calendars with doors to open onto the market. Today, Sellmer is synonymous with high-quality and extraordinary paper Advent calendars designed with attention to detail.
